Managing a Franchise Business

Running a franchise business is much more than making a sandwich, mowing a lawn or serving a customer. The success of your franchise business will reflect your ability as a franchisee to follow the franchise systems and to make them work for you.

One of the most attractive aspects of joining a successful franchise business is the comprehensive  franchise training program offered. These franchise training program is designed for franchisees and covers the basic 'how-to' of the franchise business.

Franchise Training Programs

As each person’s situation is different one training program will not be able to cover all aspects of running a successful franchise business, and will generally focus on elements core to the franchise.

If we look at a restaurant we can see examples of the type of information covered in a franchise training program, and some of the skills that you will need to develop as a franchise, that fall outside of the franchise training program.

Franchisee training program a restaurant franchise will offer

  • How to prepare each of the products on the menu
  • How to roster staff effectively
  • How to efficiently operate the restaurant
  • How to use and clean the equipment
  • How to use the tools of the system to measure performance
  • How to order food from suppliers and manage inventory

These are all critical for the health of the franchise business and the franchise brand overall, however the franchise training program will not be able to cover everything.

Additional Franchisee Training Required

Each Franchisee will also need to learn:

  • How to manage cash flow
  • How to manage staff effectively to keep them motivated and engaged
  • How to identify and seize franchise business opportunities for growth
  • How to develop efficiencies in their own franchise business to achieve higher profitability
  • How to manage the demands of the franchise business and home life
  • How you prepare for the tough times

The most successful franchisees have built on the initial franchisee training programs provided by the franchisor and have a passion to build sales and continually improve efficiency.

The operations of the restaurant are only one aspect of managing a franchise business.

As a franchisee and business owner you can expect to continue learning skills for managing your franchise business beyond the initial franchise training program.
